A Place Christ Heals

When someone unjustly treats you like as if you have no value...what is your knee-jerk tendency? If you're at all like me you may be tempted to lash back in pain and self-defense. After all, your honor and well-being are at stake. "How dare that person say/do/be that toward me?"

The Gospel gives us another way to respond. Jesus gives us healing in the wounded places of our souls - the place from which springs forth the ugly reactions we tend to give to those who hurt us.

Because Christ took our sufferings upon himself and has given us new life in himself, we are free to bless those who hurt us - to pray for them with a joyful heart motivated by God's healing grace in our own lives.

1 Peter 2:20-24 (NIV)
But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God. To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps. "He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth." When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly.

He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.

Jesus

Deity in man - can it be?
See him born in poverty?
God en-fleshed with inquiry,
Answers as wisdom for all to see.
Humbled, crushed, and scorned to be,
The full suffering for you and me...
Could this be...Deity?
Jesus enthroned in heaven above,
Having displayed his Father's love,
Exalted sits, prays, and keeps,
Careful watch o'er all his sheep.
You, Dear Soul, unworthy yet graced,
Walk in joy and be embraced,
Longing now to see his face,
Soon his glory your soul will taste.
